Valsalva Manoeuvre

| The Valsalva
Manoeuvre is a standard test made by most medics to test the autonomic nervous system. It
requires the patient to take a deep breath and whilst pinching their nose and keeping the
mouth closed, trying to exhale against a resistance of 40mm Hg for 15 seconds. This graph shows how the heart rate increases during this test and then returns to normal once the subject breaths normally. This instrument can therefore be used to measure in detail the Valsalva Manoeuvre, which is one of the cardiologists Gold Standards in testing the autonomic nervous system. |
